"Why do I have anxiety when everything in my life seems to be fine?"
The answer is that the brain does not respond only to objective reality. It responds to how it interprets that reality.
Every second, our nervous system receives an enormous amount of information from our environment, our body, and our thoughts. Based on this information, the brain continuously evaluates whether we are safe or potentially in danger.
When it determines that our personal resources may not be sufficient to cope with a situation, it activates the anxiety response.
This process usually occurs automatically and, in most cases, without our conscious awareness.
Many factors can contribute to this activation:
- genetic predisposition;
- stressful or traumatic life experiences;
- thinking patterns characterised by anticipating danger;
- difficulties with emotional regulation;
- sleep deprivation;
- medical conditions;
- prolonged stress;
- use of certain substances;
- prolonged uncertainty.
Often, anxiety is not triggered by a single event, but by the accumulation of multiple factors over time.
Research in cognitive psychology has shown that people experiencing anxiety tend to overestimate the probability of negative outcomes while underestimating their own ability to cope with them. This cognitive bias increases vigilance and keeps the alarm system activated even when the original danger has disappeared.
What Happens in the Brain During Anxiety?
Although we often talk about "anxiety" as though there were a single brain centre responsible for it, the reality is far more complex.
Anxiety emerges from the coordinated activity of several brain networks that continuously evaluate the environment, interpret available information, and prepare the body to respond.
One of the most relevant structures is the amygdala, a small region within the limbic system involved in the rapid detection of potentially threatening stimuli. Its function is not simply to generate fear, but to act as a detector of biological relevance.
The amygdala works closely with the hippocampus, which provides contextual information and memories of previous experiences, and the prefrontal cortex, which is involved in functions such as planning, reasoning, decision-making, and emotional regulation.
When these regions exchange information effectively, we are able to evaluate whether a threat is real, adjust our response accordingly, and return to a calmer state once the danger has passed.

One of the most important ideas I would like to convey in this article is that anxiety does not always need to be eliminated..
In fact, a life completely free from anxiety would be dangerous.
Adaptive anxiety improves our ability to detect risks, prepare for an important presentation, respond quickly to unexpected events, or remain focused during demanding situations.
The problem begins when this system stops responding proportionately.
Anxiety begins to lose its adaptive function when:
- it occurs very frequently without a clear danger;
- its intensity is disproportionate to the situation;
- it persists even after the problem has disappeared;
- it interferes with work, relationships, or sleep;
- it causes the person to avoid important activities;
- it produces significant distress.
In these situations, the alarm system stops helping us and begins to consume physical and mental resources unnecessarily.
We could compare it to an extremely sensitive smoke detector that goes off every time someone makes toast. The detector itself is working, but it has lost its ability to distinguish between a real fire and an ordinary everyday situation.
Something similar can happen in the brain.
Anxiety Disorders
Experiencing anxiety does not mean that a person has an anxiety disorder.
Anxiety disorders are a group of clinical conditions defined by specific diagnostic criteria and characterised by persistent fear or anxiety that causes significant impairment in a person's life.
The most common include:
Generalised Anxiety Disorder
Generalised anxiety disorder is characterised by excessive and difficult-to-control worry about multiple areas of everyday life over a prolonged period.
People often describe feeling as though their mind can never "switch off."
Panic Disorder
Panic disorder involves unexpected panic attacks accompanied by intense fear that they will happen again.
Anticipatory fear frequently leads people to avoid places or situations where a previous episode occurred.
Specific Phobias
Fear is focused on a particular object or situation, such as flying, driving, heights, or certain animals.
Avoidance often reduces anxiety temporarily but maintains the problem over the long term.
Social Anxiety Disorder
Anxiety occurs primarily in situations where a person fears being observed, evaluated, or negatively judged by others.
